Apple crisp, my favorite go-to desserts, it is very easy and simple to make. Whenever I make this dessert I always have two batches because it never seems to last a week. To me this dessert is the perfect combination of tart and sweet, it all just seems to balance out perfectly. Not to mention it is a great combination of textures. Some soft apples, some apples with a little bite and to top it all of the crispiness of the oats. I definitely need a lot of self-control in order to not eat the whole thing myself.

Apples
This step is easy and straight forward, but a couple of things to keep in mind is not to forget to add the lemon juice to your water in your bowl. Peeling and slicing apples is not a quick process, so you want to make sure they don’t oxidize. Also, if you are using an apple slicer the cuts are not always perfect. So it is important to make sure there is no seeds or endocarp (Thin hard inner layer that covers the seed)
Once all of your apples have been sliced, go ahead and dump out the water and start adding in your spices and mix until evenly coated. This apple filling is easy and simple which makes it perfect for almost all apple desserts. After you have mixed everything until it was evenly coated, go ahead and set the apples to the side to make the crumble.
Crumble
Making the crumble is just as easy as the apples. You want to add your oats, flour, and brown sugar to a large bowl. From there you want to add your softened butter. You can just add them whole and squeeze the butter to death in order to incorporate it all. However, I find cutting the butter into smaller pieces makes it a lot easier. I do recommend not using your fingers as I did it just gets messy, try a knife or kitchen scissors instead.
As soon as all your ingredients are in the bowl go ahead and squeeze like Homer when he’s mad at Bart until everything is incorporated. You want to make sure there is no flour left at the bottom of the bowl. Once it resembles wet clumpy sand is when you are ready to throw everything together.
There is no special way of putting these ingredients together. You just want to make sure the apples are at the bottom. More importantly, you want to make sure that every apple is at least covered with the crumble. Also, make sure you refrain yourself from trying to press down and pack the crumble. Keeping it lose will allow it to crisp up and add texture to the final product.
Baking
When baking you want to keep an eye on your bake time. Since I live in Colorado our altitude is different than those in other states which can drastically affect your cooking times. Depending on where you live, it can either take longer to bake or shorter. At this point, you want to play it by eye and color so it doesn’t burn.

Time to Eat!
After making this dessert for a long time I can say that this is great both cold and warm. If you are warming it up in the microwave I recommend starting at 30 seconds and going up from there. To make this extra special you can make it A La Mode and add vanilla bean ice cream. Or you can simplify it and add caramel sauce if that’s your thing. Either way, it is your dessert to dress up any way you want all that is left is to enjoy.
